The Green Photographer

American Photo pubished an article about how to become a "green" photographer. As I was reading it, I soon realized that I'm already doing many of them. I thought I would share with you how I have become a GREEN Photographer:

1. Shoot locally - transportation accounts for one-third of the average American's "carbon footprint"
2. Use Digital Cameras instead of Film, no more chemicals used
3. Use Rechargeable Batteries for my equipment
4. Use electronic delivery of images through e-mail, FTP and my website
5. Display and Share photos using an online Internet Photo Gallery
6. Encourage clients to only print the photos they want to display
7. Use local business only
8. Use LCD Flat Panels to work or to display my work
9. Reduce paper waste by reading online
10. Set computer to power-down various components when not in use
11. And finally: Reduce, Reuse and recycle everything we can

Did you happen to look at the sky on Saturday night? Wow, I was just taken in by all the color! It looked like the sky was on fire. I haphazardly grabbed my camera, stepped outside into the cold cold air, snapped a pic and ran back in the house. brrrrr!

Recently I was asked by Dentistry by Design to photograph their new office. It is a gorgeous building! They have such a warm welcome when you walk in. Everyone that works for Dr. Ionescu is so nice and professional. They are a great group of people.

Wow another year has gone. 2008 was a great year, full of happy memories. I hope that 2009 has more in store for me. I'm having a hard time this year focusing on my resolutions. I do have a few and while some may seem pretty basic, they are very specific and personal for me.

This year I want to become much more organized; in life, in business, in general.
Be a more active person; running, walking. And even more active in my community. I try to "do my part" every year, but I always feel like I can do more.
Surround myself with people whom I admire and those that are respectful of all things.
Be more "green". Those that know me, probably think I'm already pretty green, but I need to do more. My house is pretty green (no VOC's, harsh chemicals or petroleum here), my garden is green (organic, with my own compost), my lawnmower is green (electric baby!), now I just need my car to be green. :)
Give more support to the local business owners. I too feel the pinch of our financial crisis and realize more than ever how important it is to support your local business owner. Also, support the local farmers by shopping at the farmer's markets.

I'm sure there are more on my list, I'll add as I think of them. I am thankful for all the friends that I have made in 2008. Some have become my closests, dearest friends. You know who you are. :)

Make me sensitive to the qualities and virtues of others, that I may draw out into the light the beautiful radiant belongings of their hearts.
Help me to be an artist, collecting the beauty of every soul, the glow of youth, the gentleness, the laughter or tears of each life that is precious in Thy sight. Moms in Motion - week 3

I've been sick for 10 days...10 days! I haven't trained at all this week. Oh well... I did attempt to run this last Saturday and just couldn't breathe. So I walked the 2.5 miles. And we had planned a group photo for Saturday as well. It was rainy, hazy and 7 in the morning, no sun, so our picture looks dreary. And there were some "technical difficulties", but at least we got it!

Moms in Motion - week 2

Whew! I ran 2 miles on Saturday. Well...I ran until I had to walk and then walked until I could run again. But I think I did okay. I started to get a cramp in my side which slowed me down a bit. What is that from? Maybe I should google it. :P
This week is very busy, so I'm not sure I'll be able to train much this week. I have a wedding that I'm photographing on Saturday, so I will not be running with my group. But they will certainly be in my thoughts! They are an awesome group of women. I know they'll do well on Saturday. Run ladies, RUN!!! :)

Mini Sessions!!!

Mini Sessions are coming up soon! Yes I know you are all excited because this means you get a portrait session at fraction of the cost. There is no firm date yet, but it will be for Halloween portraits so start planning. I'll post details later....but I guarantee you'll love it!

For those of you who have not attended a Mini Session - they are typically "themed" sessions that take the place of a regular Child or Family Session. They are approximately 20 minute sessions held at my house or local park. Session fees are extremely affordable ($20-$25) and often offer a special package deal on prints. All this - and you still get the same quality portraits, post session enhancing, and a private online gallery.

Tips for photographing children

As a child photographer I am often asked for tips on how to photograph children. Taking your children’s pictures may very well seem like “Mission Impossible”, but it doesn't have to be.
Here are some tips to help you:

Be prepared – charge your camera, clean the lens, make sure you have enough film or digital memory, change any necessary settings

Go outside – Find a shady spot in a park, backyard, natural setting. Let them explore while you click away

Don’t expect perfection - Some children are not going to sit or pose just the way you want them. And most times it is not how they would normally pose or sit. They will feel uncomfortable and it will show in their faces.

Be ready - Have yourself positioned and finger ready to click at a milliseconds notice.

Loose the gadgets – no tripod, reflectors, grandma dancing in the background yelling “Smile! Look here!”

Go digital – take 100 pictures! Or a 1000 for that matter! You can delete the ones that didn’t turn out & keep the good ones

Get at eye level – Photos look much more natural from the child’s eye level than from hovering above

Know when to quit - You don’t want them to associate pictures with frustration. Keep it simple, calm & end on a good note. Give them a reward. If you didn’t get the shots you want, try another day.

And if all else fails… hire a professional! :) I come to your house or a favorite park and often stay for up to 3 hours. It allows you and your children to take breaks, eat, even let the child nap!

Moms in Motion - week 1:

Week 1: Woke up at 6:30am and ran 1 mile in 11.14 minutes. I ran a slow & steady pace just to see where I was at. (In highschool I was at the 7 minute mark!) This was just day 1, so it can only get better from here...right? And I at least RAN the whole mile!

Tuesday I mowed the lawn - that counts as a workout for sure! Especially if you've ever been to my house and seen my backyard.....there's a lot.

On Wednesday I got fit for new running shoes at The Running Zone. They analyzed our feet, our walk and the way we run. I have never been so consious of my walk before. My feet are "under pronate" just incase you were wondering. :) But apparently it makes a differnece because they picked out my shoes according to my feet needs and wow! My new shoes are so comfortable. They also so generously gave our group a discount on our purchases. I got some new gear and felt more motivated than ever!

I'm really excited to go running on Saturday morning with my new gear....even if it is before the sun rises....ugh.

Moms in Motion

I have officially started training for a 5k run! Crazy huh? Well maybe. But it's for a good cause.
I am running with a great group of moms to support My Sister's House. My Sister's House is the first and only non-profit organization to specifically identify and address the unique needs of women and children impacted by domestic violence in the Central Valley.

For the next 8 weeks I will be training for the November 8th event. I will also be collecting their "wish list" items and monetary donations. If you would like to contribute, please contact me at portraits@alysonviducich.com
